According to
Webbiquity B2B Marketing Blog: "Americans spent nearly a quarter of
their time online on social networking sites and blogs in 2010, up from 15.8
percent just a year earlier—a 43 percent increase. 40 percent of U.S. online
time is spent on just three activities: social networking, playing games and
emailing."

Since
I use Twitter daily, I
often get asked if being on a social network is really important for the
success of a business. I know it has helped me find interesting things
and people. I am now reading a book that says YES, it is
very important especially now when most people go to the web first for everything
they need or want. Why? Because people are looking to their
social networks to give them advice and special offers. I am not very deep into the book yet, so check the
To Be Productive blog (2bproductive.blogspot.com)
for a summary later this month after I finish it.
I do agree that having a social web
footprint (newly created term by me to encompass more than social networks
and social media) is important. Different media and different networks work
depending on the type of business or how it wishes to interact with present
and potential customers. With that in mind, I started a 3-part series
on this topic. Check each of them out using the links below if you have
questions on this topic.

“Networking is not about hunting. It is about farming.
It’s about cultivating relationships. Don’t engage in ‘premature
solicitation’. You’ll be a better networker if you remember that.”
